Teen to appear in court for Westville hijacking

The suspects lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

A NINETEEN-YEAR old man is due to appear in court today after he and another suspect allegedly stopped a taxi driver at gunpoint and forced him to the back of the taxi on Maryvale Road, Westville.

The 51 year-old taxi driver had just dropped off passengers in Maryvale Road on Wednesday, 5 December when the incident is said to have occurred.

The suspects lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

“The suspects ran on foot towards Makhula Road. Constable Laatz responded to the complaint and ran towards the river. He ran along the river and spotted a male hiding behind a thick bush, he managed to apprehend the suspect and recover a firearm,” said Westville SAPS communications officer, Cpt Elizabeth Squires.

The second suspect fled and is still at large.

A case of carjacking has been registered at Westville Police Station. The 19-year-old suspect will appear in court on today.

“Constable Laatz was commended for his swift response and apprehending the suspect,” said Squires.
