What to do with recycled items

Residents are encouraged to use the recycling depots which can be found around the Highway area.

WITH ongoing issues with the supply and collection of orange recycling bags in the eThekwini Municipality, residents had to drop off recyclables themselves at recycling depots around the Highway area. Here is a list of centres to visit:

The Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association, Delamore Road, Hillcrest

The Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association, [KHBA] is a non-profit organisation [NPO] and a public benefit organisation [PBO] that was registered in 2006.

One of its objectives is recycling and with the help of DSW, especially Rosanne Griffin, KHBA was granted the use of municipal land on its site in Delamore Road 2008.

The opening and closing times are 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 12.30pm on Saturdays, and 11.30am to 3.30pm on Sundays. It is open on public holidays.

What is accepted: They accept paper, cardboard, Tetrapak, large appliance polystyrene, glass bottles and cans.

The centre still encounters problems with irresponsible people dropping off their household rubbish despite many signs. Plastic is a major challenge.

There are seven categories of plastic and they do not accept category three which are items such as PVC plumbing pipes; they do not accept category six which are the small polystyrene food trays; nor do they accept category seven which is described as “mixed” – which is baffling in itself. The numbers are on the items inside a triangle. There is no fee involved but the staff do receive tips.
