Kloof Conservancy members raise funds for crowned eagles

The auction generated a total of R7 000 and in addition to the bid amount, two generous donations were also made.

A PAINTING of a crowned eagle painted by local, part-time artist and Kloof Conservancy member, Ivan Foster, was handed to its new owner and top bidder in a recent auction, Warren Armstrong (also a Kloof Conservancy member) on Saturday.

“The auction generated a total of R7 000 as in addition to the bid amount, we received two generous donations from Fredericke Liasides and Kevin Barber. The funds will be transferred to the UKZN Foundation Trust and allocated to the Crowned Eagle Research Project thus making a valuable contribution to this amazing and important project,” said Kloof Conservancy chairman, Paolo Candotti.

Candotti said crowned eagles are the most iconic raptors in the Upper Highway and maybe in eThekwini as a whole and it is critically important that people fully understand their behaviour patterns and needs, to ensure their survival in an increasingly urbanised landscape.

“Dr Shane McPherson’s research is leading edge thanks to the intensity and continuity that has been devoted to this project. The funds raised will enable McPherson to place tracking devices on a number of juveniles and provide brand new and important data on the eagles movements.”
