Speeding motorist kills water mongoose in Kloof

Motorists have been urged to reduce their speed when driving on Kloof Falls Road and Bridle Road.

CHAIRMAN of the Kloof Conservancy, Paolo Candotti has once again appealed to motorists using Kloof Falls Road and Bridle Road to please do what the law requires of them, which is driving at 40kph.

This comes after a carcass of a young water mongoose, most likely killed overnight by a speeding motorist on Kloof Falls Road/Bridle Road at the Kloof Falls Picnic site crossing, was found on Sunday.

“This crossing is used by many animals that cross from the main gorge through to the Longshadow section of the reserve and vice versa.”

“We have previously appealed for motorists to adhere to the speed limit of 40kph but 95 per cent of motorists ignore the speed limit. I have had drivers flash lights at me, drive up my exhaust pipe, hoot at me, overtake me and give lots of rude hand gestures simply because I drive at the speed limit,” said Candotti.

He said they have also appealed to the authorities to install any type of speed reduction devices, “but they refuse as they say it is a “M road and is considered a priority through-road”.
They also did a survey (which they did not share with us) and said that the road does not warrant speed reduction devices whether they be speed bumps, just lines on the road or camera traps.
“The volume of hikers crossing the road from the picnic site to the trails is very high at weekends and it is a nightmare to cross because of the speeding vehicles, most motorists seem to treat it as a grand prix track. It is just a matter of time before a human is run-over,” said the concerned Candotti.
Over the past two and a half years, Candotti said they we have lost a porcupine and a young caracal and now a water mongoose. “These are the ones we are aware of. Accidents can happen but if motorists drive at the speed limit of 40kph there is a reasonable chance that they will be able to stop if they spot an animal on the road,” he said.
