Volunteers needed to keep clean-up on track

While the project is near its end, residents are encouraged to help maintain the cleared areas in the Kloof area.

WORK by the Railway Action Group to clean up the railway began in earnest on 25 September and, with two mornings a week devoted to this, great strides have been made.

“The work is now close to the end-goal – the Everton Bridge and incorporated into this is the railway line stretching right back as far as the Willingdon Bridge,” said the Kloof Project’s Sandra Wickee.

With the support of local businesses providing sponsored lunch packs, supplemented by committed residents, the supervisory work of Barry Lang and George Victor of the Hillcrest Conservancy, and herbicide and sponsored tree felling by Treesaurus and Don’s Tree Felling Services, the project has continued unabated.

Local gardeners were sent in to beef up the team of three regulars, ensuring continuous visible progress in a relatively short time. “Lasher Tools have sponsored four pairs of heavy-duty loppers capable of handling the tough work involved at this stage,” said Sandra.

“Residents will begin noticing the increased visual openness of the line, with cut and treated foliage left to naturally rot and flatten over time,” she said.

The next phase includes the flattening of the lower invasive growth that includes bramble and ferns.

“We need Kloof residents and youth groups, particularly those whose properties border directly along the railway line route, to commit to keeping the area directly in front of them brush-cut flat on a permanent basis,” said Sandra.
