WATCH: Paramedics free trapped staff from Bargain Basket rubble after structural collapse

SAPS is investigating the cause of the incident.

THREE people were moderately injured and nine others had minor injuries after a roof collapsed inside Bargain Basket in Pinetown.

ER24 spokesman, Ineke van Huyssteen, said paramedics arrived on scene shortly after 3pm and were led to the back of the shop.

“Three females were trapped under some of the stock that was stored on top of a storage deck. ER24, the SAPS Search and Rescue team and the eThekwini fire department helped to get the injured patients out from underneath the rubble and stock. The workers from the shop also helped to free their colleagues,” she said.

Van Huyssteen said the three trapped women were moderately injured and that another nine people had minor injuries.

ER24, as well as various other medical services on scene, transported the injured to hospitals.

Bargain Basket Pinetown posted on its Facebook page:

“We just want to thank the community for all the support and espesially their prayers. We are so relieved and grateful to say that there was no serious injuries. 3 staff member will spend the night in hospital for observation. A big thank you to the police, paramedics, search and rescue, fire rescue and all other teams that was there in minutes. Thank you to the trauma councillors that supported our staff and management. Again thank you we are grateful for everyone’s prayers.” (sic)

The shop is closed for Black Friday, but will resume trading as normal from tomorrow.
