Westville SAPS charge elderly woman for opening false case

A case of defeating the ends of Justice has been opened. The 66-year-old victim appeared in court on Tuesday, 6 November, the case was remanded in the Pinetown Court for Thursday, 6 December.

A SIXTY-SIX  year old Asian female alleged that whilst coming from the toilets at the Pavilion Shopping Centre she was confronted at knife-point and asked to give up her wedding ring.

According to the police statement, the woman claimed she was confronted by an African male armed with a knife, who asked her for her cell phone which she said she didn’t have.

He then demanded the ring she was wearing, to which she surrendered.

“The victim reported this to Pavilion management and security and opened a case of Robbery at Westville SAPS,” said Westville SAPS communications officer, Elizabeth Squires.

The victim’s daughter, who wrote on social media after the incident, claimed:

“My mother was at the Pavilion Shopping Centre when she needed to use the toilets, after coming out the toilet on the mezzanine level, she was approached by a man who asked her for the time. One of the men then told her to be quite as he had a knife and all he wanted was her wedding ring.

“The best part of all thereafter was that there was no security personnel to be found anywhere to report this to. After getting assistance from a lady at the Vodacom store and taken to the security office. They couldn’t assist her to track the guy on camera footage. No sort of assistance in any way was given to her by at least giving her a glass of water to drink or to ask her if she was injured.

“The security just kept telling us that they cannot locate the person with the description that was given to them by my mother. I then brought the security to the spot where she was robbed and pointed out a security camera. Told the security to check at the footage and find my mum on that so they could see the suspect. We were then told that ‘the camera does not capture this area’.”

The case docket was allocated to D/Sergeant Sibongiseni Ngcobo for investigation.

After intensive investigation the investigating officer established that the robbery did not take place and a false case had been opened.

A case of Defeating the Ends of Justice has been opened, the 66 year old victim appeared in court on Tuesday, 6 November, the case has remanded in the Pinetown Court for Thursday, 6 December 2018.

Westville SAPs welcomed this arrest and have sent a stern warning about people opening false cases to claim from insurance. Sergeant Sibongiseni Ngcobo was commended for his investigation.
