New Germany couple celebrates diamond anniversary

New Germany couple, Ellis and Val Miles have been happily married for 60 years.

ELLIS and Val Miles have always been in content with each other’s company which is the reason they are still happily married, 60 years later.

The New Germany couple will celebrate their diamond anniversary on 22 November.

Unlike most couples, Ellis and Val said they like staying indoors.

“We stayed on the farm for 22 years and it was a quiet life; we barely went out to socialise. We do go out once in a while, but we prefer each other’s company,” said Val.

The two love birds met in 1957 in Queenstown, and started dating in January 1958. They got engaged in June and married in November that year.

Val said although they met in 1957, she did not think much about him, and he only caught her eye in 1958. “I was a bit difficult at first until I realised he was a pretty good guy.”

Ellis said everything just felt right which is the reason he decided to make Val his wife within a year of dating. “I knew she was the one.”

Trust, honesty and being faithful to one another are the main factors that has contributed to the Miles’ peaceful and lasting marriage.

“Marriage it not a 50/50 commitment, as I believe each person should give 100 per cent because when you do that you also get 100 per cent in return,” said Ellis.

Val believes that they have had a happy marriage because of the fact that they do not expect more than what they have, “in a nutshell, I can proudly say we have had a fabulous marriage.”

The couple has one daughter, two grandchildren and two great-grand children.
