Help whip Durban City into shape

Sign the petition and help ensure the Problem Building by-law is enforced by the city.

THE Democratic Alliance whip for Economic Development and Planning, Councillor Marlaine Nair, has urged the Highway community to sign her problem building petition and ensure the city enforces its Problem Buildings by-law.

Nair recently conducted an oversight visit at a derelict building in Nagina phase 2 on the outskirts of the city.

“This particular building has remained unfinished and in a derelict state for more than 20 years,” said Nair.

“Residents have complained about the huge bushes and unkempt state of the building, which presents itself as a hideout for criminals, criminal activity and illegal dumping. This has led to degradation of the area and the city as a whole.”

The local councillor said there were numerous buildings in a similar state across the city.

“Due to the inaction of the city in enforcing the Problem Building by-law, it is almost impossible to hold these owners accountable. The city’s current programmes are not equipped to deal with the already 140 derelict buildings and those yet to be identified,” said Nair.

“I requested a motion in full council for the City to enforce the by-law. It was sadly rejected, even though the municipality has a legal obligation to implement the by-law as the full council, in which executive and legislative powers are vested in, has duly passed it,” said Nair.

Nair will resubmit the motion to the full council to set-up a designated unit to enforce the Problem Buildings by-law and ensure that city wide implementation of the by-law is enforced.
