‘Surprise’ing turn of events as councillor tackles illegally parked trucks

The DA's PR councillor for Ward 15 called a meeting to address the road damage and traffic congestion caused by large trucks along Surprise Road.

MOTORISTS who make use of Surprise Road will soon feel the positive outcome of netting that addressed the traffic congestion and road damage due to numerous illegally parked trucks.

The DA PR councillor for ward 15 and DA whip for economic development in eThekwini, Marlaine Nair, called a meeting with Metro police, the chief buyer at Cambridge Foods and a delegation of about 23 suppliers to address issues surrounding the traffic congestion and road damage caused by trucks on the road.

The meeting concluded positively as suppliers committed to agree to instruct their truck drivers to make use of the truck stop nearby, to park off while waiting for their turn for delivery.

“Cambridge Foods added more parking bays to accommodate more trucks and have also put in internal mechanisms to ensure smooth off-loading of trucks with shortened times,” said Nair.

The local councillor welcomed the suggestions and input from the various representatives and added she would meet with the City officials to repair the road.

“Presently, the five-year economic development and job creation strategy has failed dismally to create the desired number of jobs. It is imperative that we do all we can to assist businesses so that jobs are not lost through businesses closures or moving away from our area.

“We will offer whatever support we can, but we will also ensure that truck drivers comply with the traffic regulations so that law and order is maintained,” she said.
