Future is clearer for children

More than 20 children from two children's homes will receive a free pair of glasses from Spec-Savers in Scottsville Mall.

WHEN was the last time you had your eyes tested? This service is readily available to many who can afford it, but for thousands this is not within their means.

Spec-Savers Scottsville Mall offered their services to help the children in need at two worthy organisations.

Forty eight children had their eyes tested last Wednesday at iKhethelo Children’s Village and another 113 had their vision tested on the Thursday at the Lily of the Valley Children’s Village.

Eight children from iKhethelo required glasses and one of the children has a cataract, which Spec-Savers will arrange to be removed, pro bono. Twenty children from the Lily of the Valley require glasses.

“Based on the results from the tests done, we will establish if we need to book them in for another test and will supply them with everything, from frames to lenses,” said the optometrist and owner of Spec-Savers Scottsville Mall, Richard Stonier.

Each of the children also received a small hamper that included a juice box, chips and a few sweets.

“It was mentioned to us that they, iKhethelo, needed someone to assist with testing the kids’ eyes. We were put in contact with Richard who volunteered to give up two days of his time to provide a full service to the children,” said the Rotary Club of Hillcrest’s president, William Gibson.

“It’s an important part of life, it can be hugely hindering if you can’t see properly. Rotary is a good link for corporates to assist deserving projects and to facilitate the process.

Thank you to Spec-Savers and Richard for donating their services,” said William.

The NPO’s manager, Graeme Wright, thanked the Rotarians as well as Spec-Savers for their support.

“Eye testing is something that is often neglected and taken for granted and the children don’t say anything. It’s just amazing and a real blessing to us,” he said.
