News briefs: Police nab hijacking and murder suspects

Two men were arrested for allegedly hijacking an elderly couple last week. In a separate incident, police arrested a 24-year-old man for murder.

Two arrested for carjacking

TWO men who allegedly hijacked an elderly couple in Pinetown last Friday were arrested.  Pinetown cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele, said it is alleged the 83-year-old victim and his wife were about to get into their vehicle after shopping when they were accosted by three suspects, one of whom had a firearm. Manqele said the couple were allegedly pushed and fell onto the ground and sustained injuries.

“Two suspects fled the scene in a hijacked VW Polo and the third suspect was arrested by detectives who were in the vicinity. The victims were taken to the clinic and their vehicle was later recovered at 14th street in Clermont.

“Police continued their investigation and a 19-year-old suspect was arrested at his home in Clermont on Saturday. The third suspect is still at large,” he said.

Man arrested for murder

KwaDabeka police arrested a 24-year-old man on Thursday for the alleged murder of a 30-year-old man.
“On Saturday, 8 September, police responded to a complaint of assault along Lwandle Road in KwaDabeka and when they arrived, found a man who had been severely assaulted by the community. The victim was accused of theft and was taken to KwaDabeka clinic and later died at RK Khan hospital,” said Manqele.

Police have appealed to people not to take the law into their own hands.
