Seven years imprisonment for Westville robbers

The men were convicted on Friday, 24 August.

Mabandla Khuzwayo (30) Sizwe ‘Mbodla’ Latha (25) were sentenced to seven years imprisonment for robbing a 61-year-old man on 31 October 2017.

Westville SAPS communications officer, Capt Elizabeth Squires said the victim’s car broke down on the N3 freeway.

“He was confronted by two men who pointed a knife at him and demanded his cellphone, cash and cigarettes. The suspects were disturbed by passing motorists and managed to run away. The victim then alerted the police who arrived within seconds,” said Squires.

Constables Nkosinathi Dlamini and Sandile Cele got a clear description of the two suspects and in which direction they ran.

“The two members with the victim proceeded on the N3 on foot towards the bridge. The victim immediately spotted Latha and Khuzwayo. Police gave chase on foot and managed to apprehend one of them while the other one fled. He was detained at Westville SAPS for attempted robbery. The case was then allocated to D/W/O Thulani Dludla for further investigation,” explained Squires.

Meanwhile the hunt was still on to arrest the second suspect. A week later, police received a call from an informer about the whereabouts of the second man.

“He was found hiding at a house in Chesterville. Both Latha and Khuzwayo appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court. They were both denied baile as they had previous convictions.
They were convicted on Friday, 24 August.
