No mis’steak’ing local heroes

It was put to a vote and Highway's community heroes were chosen for the Upper Highway Heroes competition.

AVID Facebook users voted and five winners were chosen in the The Hussar Grill Kloof’s Upper Highway Heroes competition.

The community were invited to nominate a community hero from five different areas: Waterfall, Crestholme, Hillcrest, Kloof and Westville. Each community hero winner received a R2 000 Hussar Grill meal voucher.

Once people and organisations were nominated, two finalists were chosen and a voting poll was created for people to vote for whom they felt deserved to win. There were more than 860 total votes.

“The aim of the competition was to recognise the heroes in our communities who have played an important role in supporting, helping and bringing about change to the Upper Highway communities,” said the owner of The Hussar Grill Kloof, Jaco Snyman.

Waterfall’s winner was Tracey Mclellan Smit of Lost Souls Animal Rescue KZN, Crestholme’s Clinton Bataille for going above and beyond in his community, Kloof’s Sam and Malcolm Shallcross for launching the Kloof Street Patrol and bringing the community together, Westville’s Janet and Matthew Legemaate for their organisation, Hero 777, and Hillcrest’s Ivan Ikes for his upliftment of the local community.
