Westville campus student detained in prison for friend’s murder

Nqobani Nkanyiso Dlomo (23), a Bachelor of Commerce student, was stabbed by his friend on Saturday morning after a fight broke out.

A 20-YEAR OLD Westville campus student, who has been charged for murdering his friend, has been remanded in custody after appearing in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Monday 17 September.

Westville SAPS communications officer, Capt Elizabeth Squires said five friends were in the E block residence at UKZN on Saturday morning.

“Two of the students, who have been friends from school and shared a room in the residence, started arguing. A fight broke out and the other friends tried separating the two but the suspect stabbed the deceased three times in the chest and ran down the stairs.

“The 20-year-old suspect fled the scene. Police went to his home address, but he was nowhere to be found. Later on, at about 3pm, the suspect went to Durban Central Police station and handed himself over,” said Squires.

UKZN Westville Campus university management has extended its deepest condolences to the family and friends of 23-year-old Nqobani Nkanyiso Dlomo.

“We are gravely concerned and saddened by this tragedy. University Risk Management Services is also conducting an internal investigation into the matter.  The university’s internal disciplinary processes are also underway,” said UKZN’s acting executive director, Normah Zondo.

Dlomo, from Inanda, was a Bachelor of Commerce student in his third year of study.

Zondo said the five students residing close to where the incident took place were referred to receive counselling.
