The Molweni couple met in Hillcrest in 1966.

“I was working in the area as a clerk and it was during my lunch break that I saw Gladys. “A few weeks after I met her, she arrived at my workplace to help her mom who was working in the same offices as me.

That is when we exchanged addresses and started writing letters to one another,” said Gerald.Gerald decided to take Gladys as his wife. “Seeing that she was very helpful and a praying woman at a young age made me realise that she was the kind of person I would like to spend the rest of my life with.”

They tied the knot at a Catholic Church in Hillcrest on 28 August, 1968. Besides having to bury two of their seven children, the couple said they have had a good life.

The couple, who have 21 grandchildren advised young people to be patient with one another, love each other and not get into a relationship based on material things.
