Westville Girls’ High embroiled in racist scandal

The teacher in question handed in her resignation on Monday, 27 August.

WESTVILLE Girls’High School has launched an internal investigation and will meet with the Department of Education today regarding an alleged racist incident involving one of its teachers.

The school’s principal, Catherine Raw, issued a statement regarding the alleged racist incident at the school.

“I am sad and troubled to let you know that one of our staff stepped out of her role of teacher and used her position of parent in the classroom to make racist remark and share her biased opinion of the South African political situation,” Raw said in a statement.

The matter was drawn to Raw’s attention on Thursday evening on 23 August and an investigation was launched the next day.

The teacher, whose name is known to the Highway Mail, handed in her resignation on Monday, 27 August.

“She believes the resignation is in the best interests of the learners and the school,” said Raw.

The chairman of the school governing body, Steven Tait, said he would meet with officials from the Department of Education today and an official statement would be launched thereafter.
