Faran climbs every mountain

Thomas More College's high school SPAR Star of the Month - August 2018.

FARAN Steenkamp (left), a Grade 10 learner at Thomas More College, is its SPAR Star of the Month.

He recently returned from representing South Africa in sport climbing: speed, at the World Youth Championships in Moscow, Russia, for which he has received his Protea Colours.

“It took Faran 12.62 seconds to climb up a 15.5m speed wall,” said his mom, Kathryn.

Faran also has a love for numbers. Although he is only in Grade 10, Faran has again made the top 100 in the South African Maths Olympiad senior paper. In 2017, he made the top 100 in both the junior (Grade 8 and 9) and senior (Grades 10 to 12) papers.

He was a silver medalist in the Junior Maths Olympiad and came first in the province.

Faran was also placed in the top 100 juniors in 2016, and third in the province. He will soon write the individual and team maths competitions of the Actuarial Society of South Africa.

His interests do not stop here! Faran will soon compete in the provincial round of the World Robot Olympiad. Last year his team from Thomas More College received the provincial gold medal and made nationals.

He is also entered into Grade 7 piano this year.
