Kevin’s in the mood for dancing

No stranger to winning, Ellis has in fact held the world championship title for the past three years.

KICK ball change, weave, ankle rock, scissors step, swiggle and the double foot boogie. All line dance moves Pinetown’s Kevin Ellis has perfected and performed with aplomb, and coupled with his swag and charisma, has scooted right to the top of the World line dance championships, again.

Ellis has heel-kicked his way through the ranks and this year won the European Championships in Dublin (singles and doubles) and the world championships in Blackpool, England (singles and doubles), in his men’s solo division silver advanced and the duo categories, together with charming partner, Robyn Beck from Queensburgh. A former partner he has reunited with.

In South Africa, he and Robyn won the doubles; and the cabaret championships where he choreographed 42 artists on stage.

No stranger to winning, Ellis has in fact held the world championship title for the past three years, the European championship for two years and this year, added the duo championship title in the European and World doubles competition to his accolade list.

“This is the pinnacle of my life. I am now an all-star, the highest section in this game. I now compete in the all-star category and begin my training and practise for next year on Monday,” Ellis said.

“But I do have one more competition this year, the Rumba in the Jungle held at Sun City’s Superbowl.”

Ellis, a fashionista, designer, model, scout, choreographer and talented dancer, said what he also loves are the costumes and hats and his are beautifully crafted by creative Gareth Greaves, from Durban.

Kevin has been dancing for 50 years. In fact, his first tentative steps were soon transformed into a soft shoe shuffle and a twirl as he took to dancing like the proverbial moth whirling to a flame. He hails from Zimbabwe where he was an acclaimed 10-dance ballroom champion. He is also SA’s undefeated free-style singles, doubles and triples champ.

He gyrated his way into the well known Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris, formed part of the entertainment team on 27 cruise ships, including the Oceanos where he was lauded a hero and given a bravery award for saving 690 passengers, about 27 years ago.

He was choreographer for X-factor SA, teaches keep fit, modelling deportment, is a motivational speaker, produces shows and runs the marvellously eccentric shop at The Stables.

He also works as a stylist on movies, magazines, hair shows, and music DVDs.

This 50-something diva’s high energy levels are through the roof and he lives an exhausting but stimulating life where no day is the same.
