VIDEO: Classes suspended at Westville UKZN as student strike continues

14 people were arrested for public violence on Monday, 20 August.

UKZN Westville Campus management suspended the academic programme on the Westville campus today (Monday,  20 August) to continue its engagement with students without interruptions.

This comes after a group of students barricaded roads, damaged property and disrupted lectures on Friday, 17 August. The university is in the process of assessing the damage.

University Risk Management Services and SAPS assisted to disperse the protestors and 14 protestors were arrested for public violence.

“University management will continue to engage with student leadership in an effort to resolve student matters raised regarding amenities in certain student residences, such as problems with WIFI connection, matters of academic exclusion, the shuttle services timetable, and NSFAS administration,” said Acting Executive Director: Corporate Relations Division, Normah Zondo.

Zondo encouraged students to continue with their academic obligations at home.

“Every effort will be made to recover the academic year. The situation is currently calm on campus,” she said.
