Community shows a united front

Highway Christian Carers' said cleaning up Lahee Park is next on their list.

MORE than 100 people dedicated their morning to picking up litter in Pinetown on Thursday, 9 August and by 12pm, more than 200 DSW refuse bags were filled.

This was Highway Christian Carers’ mission to clean the streets while helping the homeless, drug addicts and getting businesses and the public involved.

“A big thank you goes to all those who made the day possible, including Pinetown Street Ministries, Department of Solid Waste, Metro Police and the friends and family of Highway,” said Donna Walker from Highway Christian Community Church.

“We believe exciting things are still to come for Pinetown and restoration and breakthroughs are happening. We formed Highway Christian Carers to bring together like minded ministries in Pinetown.”

Walker said next on their list is to tidy up Lahee Park and other areas.

“The homeless are working for food parcels on Wednesdays, cutting down over- grown bush and picking up litter. We need the help of the community,” she said.

Ward 18 councillor, Melanie Brauteseth, who joined the clean-up, said this was a great initiative.

“It is so wonderful to see so many people coming out to clean the streets of Pinetown. I hope that this can be an ongoing initiative so we can make Pinetown a livable place and if more people are involved, we can make a huge difference,” she said.
