HIGHWAY Hospice hosts outpatients at its day centre in Sherwood every Thursday.

Patients are collected from their homes and brought in for “cherishment” and treated to two nutritious meals, entertainment and care.

Most importantly, health checks are done and the necessary supplies and medicines are dispensed, free of charge.

“These days we provide patients with a social outing and stimulation which is so important to them, ” said Suellen Beare, head social worker at Highway Hospice. “We also do physical exercises, and provide mental stimulation.”

A hairdresser is present to wash and blow hair, and a manicurist does massaging and manicures. One of the volunteers brings her two little Jack Russells who interact with the patients and have become popular with the patients.

Patients are unanimous in their praise. Stanley Shunmugam, who has been an outpatient for three years, said the sense of camaraderie and support is heart-warming.

Funds raised from the Spring Breakfast on 7 September at Le Domaine will be allocated to supporting these very necessary care activities offered to terminal patients and their families by the Highway Hospice.

Carte Blanche’s Devi Govender, a daughter of KZN, will be the guest speaker.
