Parks project plans to be pushed by councillor

Ward 65 councillor, Samantha Windvogel is fighting to reinstate the City's 100 Parks Project.

THE 100 Parks Project, a planned roll-out of outdoor play lots across the city by the Parks Department to combat illegal dumping and the deterioration of public spaces in suburbs of Durban, closed down, but one councillor has made it her mission to ensure her ward still benefits from the ideals it espoused.

Samantha Windvogel, DA Coucilor for Ward 65, said she was approached by the department for suggestions about which areas she felt could benefit from the establishment of play-lots in her ward.

“Of the six parks I made submissions for, parks in Bellair, Burlington and Hillary received approval,” she said.

In addition to the city claiming back deteriorating spaces, Windvogel said she felt this was an amazing way to get people out and active.

“This a wonderful initiative since our children have now turned to technology. It will give them a reason to get outdoors and run around freely and get some exercise and fresh air,” she said.

“These play-lots enable families get together and do activities, like having picnics etc. There are tables and chairs provided as well. Instead of going out of the area you can utilise the parks within the area,”

Windevogel, speaking about the opening of a new play-lot in Bellair’s Woolwhich Avenue, reinforced her commitment to having more parks revived in a similar way.

“The 100 Hundred Parks Project may have closed, but I will personally put pressure on the parks department to install more of these play-lots throughout ward 65.”
