Support Westville’s anti-crime convoy

The event, which will take the form of a convoy of police and community groups, is planned for between 4pm and 6pm on both Friday, 3 August, and Saturday, 4 August.

WESTVILLE Community Policing Forum (CPF) encourages residents and businesses to attend and support a mass action by police and other stakeholders to highlight the need for crime awareness.

The event, which will take the form of a convoy of police and community groups, is planned for between 4pm and 6pm on both Friday, 3 August, and Saturday, 4 August.

“We will start the convoy at Pavilion Shopping Centre and then go through the whole of the Westville area following a route which will be announced on the day,” explained Westville CPF secretary, Wayne Le Roux.

In the CPF’s Facebook post about the event, Le Roux asked people to please confirm their attendence so that they could be given more details and the route could be planned.

“We aren’t announcing the route ahead of time because we really want people to come along rather than just park on the side of the road and watch the convoy pass,” he explained.

Le Roux is determined the event is not to be seen as a march or parade, but rather an active event in which the community, stakeholders in the security of the community and the police, both metro and SAPS, are all active participants.

“Families are welcome, we hope this will be a huge event with a lot of support,” said Le Roux.

He also said that while all efforts are being made to minimise the inconvenience to anyone using the roads, people can expect the event might mean a little extra congestion on the roads while the convoy is passing through an area.

“We have plans along the way to regroup at various points, and will be careful not to cause any blockages which might make it difficult for people to get where they need to in case of an emergency,” he said adding that the times and days had been specifically planned to seek a balance between the greatest visibility and for the event to raise awareness while minimising the inconvenience, and also encouraging participation.

Anyone wanting more information about this planned event can contact either Le Roux on 083 335 6866, or Westville CPF’s Asad Patel on 082940 3254.
