WATERFALL College learner, Abigail Kane, is a superstar in the making, setting her sights on an international career on screen and stage.
She is also the school’s SPAR Star of the Month.
Abigail is in Grade 11 and has made a name for herself across KwaZulu-Natal with her passion for theatre, dance, singing and music. She is a member of the KZN Youth Choir, which practices every Friday.
She dances with the Chelsea Blair Dance Company, where she takes lessons four days a week, with performances throughout the year. “Whenever there is an audition for a production that I can commit to, I make sure that I am there,” said Abigail.
Abigail has been part of a KickstArt production and in two Young Performers Projects at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Most recently, she played the role of Alice in the Waterfall College’s annual drama production, Alice Through The Looking Glass.
The Lindsey Price screenplay presented an alternative version of Alice. “To our eyes, she seems like a normal seven-and-a-half-year-old girl with a wild imagination, but she is actually deeply troubled,” said Abigail. “It was a challenge to portray, but it was such a treat, as an actress, to work on a character this complex and to explore the relationships she shared with the other characters.”
The show was well received and the audience erupted with cheer after each of the two performances.
Abigail showed great commitment throughout the production, juggling the show with her school and external obligations, but always helping others when they needed it.
Academics and her faith are equally important to this all-round achiever. Abigail has grown through her participation in the committees of the Student Christian Association and the HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) outreach programme.
Exam time is a challenge for any student, but Abigail keeps a clear head by ensuring that she puts time aside to indulge her passions. “For me, this is my dancing, which is a two-for-one deal – getting my blood pumping, while also being something that I love to do.”
“After school, I would love to study drama, doing my undergraduate in South Africa and my postgraduate overseas. Ultimately, I aim to end up as an actress on stage and on screen.”
