Rescue groups work together to save Winston Park cliff-fall-man

Various rescue and paramedic services working together,as well as a community group's quick action in alerting rescuers, helped to save a man who had fallen off a cliff while gardening on Thursday afternoon.

A MAN who had slipped and fallen down a cliff while working in a garden in Winston Park, was rescued on Thursday afternoon after community group, Winston Park Guardians, alerted Rescuetech and asked them to gather a team of rescuers.

According to a statement shared by Rescuetech search and rescue team member, Christopher Williams, on Facebook last night, a team was assembled from a variety of rescue and medical support specialists including Netcare911ER24 EMS (Pty) Ltd, and eThekwini fire who managed to make their way down to the cliff edge to find the patient.

Next, paramedics were lowered down the cliff to stabilise the patient and a Rescuetech member was lowered with a Sked and spinal board to keep the patient strapped in position for the trip back up the cliff.

“After securing him onto the spinal board and placing him in the Sked, and working as a team, everyone involved started to haul the patient and rescue medic to the top. It was approximately a 180m haul to the top, up a 60m cliff face and 120m steep slope with a lot of trees and bushes, ” said Williams.

Back on the top, an ambulance was waiting to transport the patient to hospital.

Williams ended his post by thanking all who were involved in the rescue including Blue Security – Durban for making a short video (see below) and taking pictures of the rescue itself.
