Pageant winner aspires to create waves of change

TWENTY-year-old Pinetown resident, Serisha Maharaj, is on a mission to make an invaluable difference in the lives of others and her recent pageant win has provided her with a platform to create a wave of change.

Maharaj, an ambitious third year medical student at the University of Witwatersrand, was crowned the winner of the Zee TV Miss India SA KZN pageant at the Durban City Hall recently, where 11 contestants competed for the title.

When asked about her source of inspiration and the reason for entering a pageant of this nature, Maharaj said, “I drew my inspiration from my mother, Tracy Maharaj (former Mrs India SA 2014) whom I lean on for everything.

“She is my rock, my pillar of strength and my inspiration. She has supported me in every avenue of my life and when I decided to pursue this pageant, she guided and helped me through it all. It is an absolute honour to walk in her footsteps and I hope to be a great queen like her. She was able to continue her charity drives even after her reign and continues to do so which I also intend doing.”

Maharaj currently helps community health care workers at the Chiawelo Clinic in Soweto and intends on uplifting the community with charity drives, placing her focus on education through youth empowerment initiatives.

Speaking about the characteristics one needs to have to win a title like this, Maharaj said, “You need to be confident, independent and have a uniqueness which is not based on outer beauty but beauty from within. You have to be humble because that’s when your true beauty shines.”

When Maharaj is not fulfilling her passion of helping others, she enjoys dancing, gyming and spending quality time with her family and pets.

Her advice to youth is, “Always believe in yourself. Life has a lot of ups and downs but its up to you to convert those downward spells into positive moments. Take every lesson in a positive stride to create a better person within yourself. Reach for your dreams and as long as you believe in yourself, anything can be achieved. Life is not about the negative circumstances that happen to you, but its about the golden opportunities hidden within.”
