Uniforms donated to learners in need

Sixteen schools in KZN benefited from the Dress a Learner initiative.

ABSENTEEISM in schools is often attributed to a lack of school uniforms, and the EnviroServ Waste Management hoped to make a change with its Dress a Learner programme.

Through the initiative, 240 learners in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape with given uniforms, to a total value of R240 000.

EnviroServ launched the Dress a Learner programme in 2013 and to date, 320 learners have benefitted from it.

This year, R80 000 was allocated to each of the three provinces and 80 learners from 16 schools in each province benefitted.

Each school was asked to identify five learners who would benefit from receiving the uniforms.

The programme is a collaborative effort between community leaders and the Department of Basic Education.

“EnviroServ realises a good education opens doors. It is critical to invest in our children and by extension, the future of the country,” said EnviroServ’s group marketing director, Delia Lavarinhas.

Officials from the Department of Education, community leaders, principals, educators, school governing bodies, parents and learners gathered at the Salem community hall for the handover of the uniforms.
