Grandparents embrace creative flair

A handful of gogos and mkhulus in Shongweni were treated to a delightful morning art session, snacks and tea.

JOINED by an incredible team of volunteers, the Robin Hood Foundation (RHF) hosted a morning of tea and art for 32 gogos and mkhulus at the Ntshongweni Elderly Daycare, recently.

The RHF partnered with The Magic Moments Trust Painting Programme, established by Daisy White, to help people discover and develop their creativity through teaching them painting skills.

Daisy is passionate about this initiative and her aim is to enhance the lives of people, especially women, who are unemployed and from rural areas.

“The fabric painting workshops help people develop confidence in their painting abilities, provide them with purpose and a passion, and, as an outcome, feel that they are worthy and can contribute towards an inclusive society,” she said.

The elderly congregate at the ‘daycare’ each day in the middle of rural Shongweni as they have no one at home to care for them and nothing to do.

They are served a meal everyday by Grandmothers Unite and sit and chat, knit, sew and even do Gogo-Aerobics on Thursdays.

Always looking for some activity to keep the Gogo’s stimulated, The Christian Social Services were thrilled to bring a morning of art to them!

“Each gogo and mkhulu sat with volunteers and were shown how to paint a bag or cushion and then served tea with delicious snacks. They were told they could take home the mugs their tea was served in from our Mugs And Mallows campaign. Each was gifted a big box filled with food generously donated and decorated by Lyn Chivers’ team from Nedbank,” said Kim.

The Robin Hood Foundation thanked the KZN Floral Art Panel who chose it as the charity of choice for this year’s Flowers through the Home show hosted in Kloof recently.
