Thugs target Pinetown welfare safe house

Pinetown Highway Child and Family Welfare Society was forced to move the children from the safe home because of safety measures.

A SAFE home for abandoned children in KwaDabeka, which falls under the Pinetown Highway Child and Family Welfare Society, is not only falling apart but has been broken into and vandalised many times. Due to the condition of the house, the children had to be moved and it is now being look after by a caretaker until it has been renovated.

Welfare coordinator, Ellen Attwell, said the house was opened a few years ago to accommodate abandoned children.

“We can only accommodate six children at a time and because of the state the house is in, we had to move the children until it is safe for them to live in,” she said.

Pinetown Highway Child and Family Welfare Society admin support, Nithee Reddy shows the fence behind the house which has been cut-off by criminals.

The three-bedroom house has been vandalised, stripped of its copper pipes cutting off the water supply and the fence has been cut.

“The caretaker has to ask neighbours for water so we sent out a plea for anyone to donate a JoJo Tank for us and the SPAR Group responded and donated one.

“The house is just behind the freeway, (Dumisani Makhaye Drive). We are pleading with businesses or individuals to help renovate the house which also has no burglar guards,” said Attwell.

“We are also need of burglar guards, a plumber, burglar gates, a fence and some paint to make the house look inviting and warm for the children,” said Attwell.

She added that most houses are full so getting this foster house up and running will make a difference in the lives of the abandoned children.

Anyone or a company that wishes to assist can contact Attwell on 084 016 8913.
