Highway Hospice garden revamped

"The garden is a beautiful and peaceful place for families to come here an pay tribute to their loved ones who have passed on," Heather Walker, Highway Hospice fundraiser.

HIGHWAY Hospice appeals to the community to support its fund-raising initiative, the Remembrance Garden, created two years ago.

Casper Webb painted a mural of two trees in which little golden heart-shaped plaques are stuck on the Tree of Remembrance in memory of loved ones who have passed on.

Heather Walker with Casper Webb, who painted the trees in Highway Hospice’s Remembrance Garden.

Heather Walker, Highway Hospice fund-raiser, said the person who has passed on doesn’t necessarily have to be a patient who died at Hospice, it is for any friend or relative who has passed on.

Gail Sommerville volunteered to spruce up the garden and with the help of Hospice gardener and handyman, Sifiso Hlongwa, transformed the garden. They added plants, repaired the pillars and cross beams, painted the boundary wall and erected a new palisade fence.

“The garden is a beautiful and peaceful place for families to come and pay tribute to their loved ones or even have a cup of tea there at anytime,” said Walker.

Plaques for the tree in the Remembrance Garden cost R500 each with an engraved message or tribute to the person that has passed on.
