Dance duo to represent SA at world champs

The dancers are appealing to the community to help them fund their dream to perform at the world champs.

TWO local dancers, Koketso Mere and Tayla Morrow, have qualified for the South African Performing Arts Squad, in Los Angeles to compete in the World Championships of Performing arts (WCOPA) in July.

The achievement stems from the duo competing at the South African Championship of Performing Arts (SACOPA) recently, where they represented KZN for singing, dancing and acting.

SACOPA hosts this Performing Arts National event, which is represented by nine of South Africa’s provinces, as well as Lesotho and Namibia. There are a total of 3 000 competitors taking part.

Koketso (a Westville Boys’ High School learner) returned with 11 gold medals for singing and dancing, and Tayla (a Marist Stella learner) returned with 12 gold medals for acting and dancing. As a duet, named Trendsetters, they achieved six out of six gold medals.

Koketso also won the Senior Grand Champion Award for his Broadway vocal performance, achieving the highest score across all categories of vocal, instrument, dance, modelling and acting in the 16-24 year age category.

As there is no government funding for this team all entry fees, flights and accommodation costs are to be covered by the contestants. The entry fees alone amount to over R65 000 for this pair to compete.

If you are able to help get this dynamic duo to LA, a GoGetFunding account has been set up https://gogetfunding.com/world-dance-championships-in-la/ and your support would be appreciated.
