Locals explore origins of Kente cloth

Dr Christopher Richards discussed the importance and meaning of historical dress in Ghana and South Africa at his lecture at Woza Moya.

THE Hillcrest AIDS Centre hosted Dr Christopher Richards at its Woza Moya shop in Hillcrest where he gave a lecture on Kente Cloth while on his whirlwind trip to South Africa.

Richards discussed the importance and meaning of historical dress in Ghana and South Africa, and how these forms are being given new meaning and relevancy by contemporary fashion designers.

Richards earned his PhD in African art from University of Florida.

In 2015, he was awarded a Mellon postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre for the Creative Arts of Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa. Richards has held research positions and internships at a variety of museums, including the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and the Museum for African Art.
