NPA march for young people’s future

Pinetown Magistrate's Court senior public prosecutor, Phumzile Nogonyoti advised parents to seek help from the court if they have children who are addicted to drugs.

LED by the SAPS band and armed with personalised banners against abuse and crime, the NPA Pinetown magistrate with various stakeholders marched to the Pinetown CBD to celebrate Youth Month.

The purpose of the march was to go out to the people and warn them against crime and the danger of drugs.

Pinetown Magistrate’s Court senior public prosecutor, Phumzile Nogonyoti, said they need young people to change and do something positive with their lives as they are the future.

“We are also tired of sending them to jail day in and out. We came here to the CBD to find them and find out the reason for their rebellious actions.”

Nogonyoti said in his experience as a prosecutor, he has found that the main problem is drugs.

“Drugs play a huge role in the brutal crime that we see, hear and read about. The 1976 youth fought so that young people can have a brighter future so we are pleading with them to change.

“As parents we can also help fight this drug problem. If a child has a drug problem and does not want to seek help, parents can go to court and the court will force them to go to rehab,” said Nogonyoti.

He said it such a shame that young children are getting raped, “in other instances, you find that the accused does not even recall the incidents as he or she was under the influence of alcohol.”

He added that children should be taught to speak out freely and to not be afraid to talk to their elders and report such matters.

The Jes Foord Foundation, Department Health, Justice Department and Public Works were among the various stakeholders that supported this march.
