Emma dons the colour purple

St Mary's DSG primary school SPAR Star of the Month - June 2018.

GRADE 5 St Mary’s DSG learner, Emma Dunn, is the school’s primary school SPAR Star of the Month.

Emma recently took part in the SA (JKA) Nationals Karate Tournament in Johannesburg and finished with some excellent results.

She competed in the novice purple belt (10 years) group in Kata and Kumite and won gold medals in both divisions.

She is now the SA champion for 2018 in both these divisions and has been awarded her SA (JKA) novice national colours for 2018.

As Emma is a purple belt, she was given a choice and selected to compete in the junior elite brown/black belt (10 years).

She exceeded all expectations and finished with a gold medal for Kata, beating a brown belt and taking 1st place.

Emma was then awarded her SA (JKA) junior elite national colours for 2018 and will represent South Africa as part of the team in the All Africa Cup Championships on 1 September in Johannesburg.

What makes Emma’s achievements even more impressive is that she had both tonsillitis and bronchitis leading up to the event and her parents almost withdrew her from the competition.

She showed such determination, perseverance and strong character to take part and do well.

Emma started karate when she was in Grade R and has loved the sport since.

She also enjoys diving, netball, soccer and hockey. Her talents don’t only shine while enjoying sport but on stage too.

Emma is also a valued member of the St Mary’s Senior Primary choir and Junior African Music Ensemble (JAME). She also attends private voice lessons, drum lessons and plays the clarinet.
