Erin climbs to success

Westville Girls' High School has chosen Grade 9 learner, Erin Sterkenburg, as its SPAR Star of the Month.

GRADE 9 learner, Erin Sterkenburg of Westville Girls’ High School is an incredibly dedicated individual.

She puts 100 per cent effort into everything she attempts while remaining humble about her stellar achievements.

She started rock climbing in February 2017 and has already surpassed her peers, coaches and seniors expectations and in some cases, ability.

Competitions started within a month of her starting the sport and she was placed second provincially and went on to compete in the Lead Climbing National Competition in Johannesburg where she came fifth.

This year, she was placed first in her age group provincially in lead climbing and bouldering and will compete at Nationals in bouldering, lead climbing and speed climbing at the end of June.

Erin attended SA selections in May and secured her Protea colours for bouldering and SANCF colours for lead climbing which is an incredible achievement. She will go on to represent South Africa in Russia later this year in bouldering. Bearing in mind that she has only been climbing for a little over a year and achieved more than most competitive climbers in South Africa.

She has devoted hours of her time to climbing and trains at least four days per week and has the full support of her equally dedicated parents.

She also participates actively in hockey (outdoor U16A team and indoor U16B team), maths Olympiad and will be participating in basketball in the third term while maintaining her academic excellence throughout the terms. The school is incredibly proud of her achievements and can’t wait to see her grow into a confident and strong young lady and climber.
