Dad ‘Dons’ superhero cape

"A FATHER is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow" is a sentiment Don Dinnematin aspires to live up to each day for his daughter, Gia Hope.

“A FATHER is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow” is a sentiment Don Dinnematin aspires to live up to each day for his daughter, Gia Hope.

Shortly after her birth in 2015, the loving dad launched his wildly successful blog, The Don Father. Years later and the site has continued to grow following each step of his journey with his wife, Milly and their beloved daughter.

What inspired you to start the blog?

I always wanted to write, but my thoughts were always clouded when it came to deciding what to write about. I became a father in December 2015, and in January 2016 The Don Father was born. I had found my inspiration, and the rest they say, is history. My wife, Milly, is also a huge part of the blog. As with most things in life, a mother’s touch is always needed.

What is the misconception you think people have about fathers?

I wouldn’t really say misconception, but times have changed, and today’s dads not only want to be present in the lives of their children, they also want to be actively involved in their children’s upbringing.

What advice would you give to break the stereotypes that people have about fathers?

Fathers want to be there, they want to be included and involved. To all the dads, remember that you are hugely influential in the eyes of your children. Don’t be content with the fact that you’re simply a dad. Instead, challenge yourself to become a dad who is a force in the lives of your children. You are the most influential man in their world and your role as a father has a huge impact on their entire life. Make them proud by being 100 per cent present.

Describe the moment your child was born:

It is such an extraordinary event, truly life-changing. It is impossible to conceive in advance how it will affect you, how it will alter your mind and how it will expand your heart. I was overwhelmed with love and pride. The kind of pride that only jumps into your body the second your child is born, and it’s this new-found pride that stays with you from then onwards. It’s empowering, it’s humbling, and it’s probably one of the best feelings in the world.

Did you have any initial fears about being a dad and how has that changed since your child was born?

Fear is normal and something everyone will experience just before becoming a parent. There are many questions that jump in and out of your head, but the second your child comes into the world, you are gifted with an abundance of love, confidence, knowledge, and the kind of pride that makes you an instant superhero.

What is the one thing that you do that cheers your child up instantly?

Dancing. She loves to dance and lights up instantly. We often turn up the volume and dance around the house. We also sing at the top of our lungs, without a care in the world.

If you could describe fatherhood, what would you say?

Having children is, in itself a life-changing experience. You change as a person for the better. You become more loving, more patient and more in touch with your feelings. The bedtime stories, the morning kisses, the influence I get to have on my daughter and the example I want to set, all make me excited to get up in the morning and explore a new day.
