Show your support for 11th annual Sunflower Jade Sky Hike

The donation entry fee is a minimum of R120 each and the first 120 entrants paying by EFT will receive a Sunflower TOPE.

SET to be another epic event, the 11th annual Sunflower Jade Sky Hike takes place on Father’s Day this year, Sunday, 17 June.

The organising team behind the event, Ian and Mandy Tyrer of Maritzburg Tutor Centre assisted by the staff of The Sunflower Fund in Durban, are eagerly anticipating another memorable campaign.

The hike is held annually in memory of Jade Preston who passed away from leukaemia at the tender age of eight.

The hike was initially held to raise funds in support of Jade’s brave fight but it has since been held in her memory after she sadly succumbed to her illness. This commemorative walk aims to “celebrate life and to remember those who were challenged by cancer and to support those being challenged with cancer,” said Mandy Tyrer.

The hike appeals to outdoor and hiking enthusiasts as well as families and individuals of all ages and fitness levels. All are welcome to join in the adventure and to hike at their own pace, as it is not a race but simply a beautiful day to be enjoyed in the outdoors with those closest to you.

The hike commences from the Sani Pass border post at 8am and covers approximately eight kilometres up the mountain to the Highest Pub in Africa and down again.

The Midlands branch of the Four Wheel Drive of Southern Africa will lend their generous support again this year by selling breakfast rolls and hot beverages en-route as well as seconding hikers and ensuring that all participants return safely to the border post.

Interested hikers should carry their passports and are encouraged to dress warmly and carry their own refreshments to sustain them along the way.

The donation entry fee is a minimum of R120 each and the first 120 entrants paying by EFT will receive a Sunflower TOPE.

Funds raised are in support of Alec Cowan who is fighting a rare form of cancer, Non-Hodgkin’s T-cell Lymphoma and The Sunflower Fund who educates and registers stem cell donors to give hope to patients diagnosed with life-threatening blood disorders, like leukaemia, who are in need of a blood stem cell transplant from a matching donor.

Funds raised are also in support of Mary Ann Hartley, a tutor at Maritzburg Tutor Centre, who is currently undergoing breast cancer treatment.
