Highbury helps ban plastic bags

The plastic bags which was bought in by learners will now be recycled into desks for underprivileged schools.

AS part of their eco-programme, Highbury is on a misson to reduce plastic waste with the ‘Ban the Bag’ campaign.

According to a recent estimate, somewhere between five billion and one trillion plastic bags are used each year around the world.

These bags come at a high environmental cost and are one of the most ubiquitous forms of garbage. To raise awareness and ‘be the difference’ Highbury had a ‘Ban the Bag’ week.

To kick off the campaign, Highbury sold bespoke reusable shopping bags at cost to the parents and a massive 970 bags were bought over just four days.

The week culminated in a ‘plastic civvies day’ at which each boy brought plastic bags from home and ‘purged’ them into cartons at school. These plastic bags will now be recycled into desks for underprivileged schools.

“‘Ban the Bag’ week at Highbury was a huge success, it is so encouraging to see our community actively embracing the need to reduce plastic waste,” said Highbury marketing assistant, Jacqui Maurice.
