Legal Aid SA observes Child Protection Week

The Legal Aid SA Pinetown office will partner with Child Welfare in Chatsworth for a community outreach programme.

DURING Child Protection Week, Monday, 27 May to Sunday, 3 June, state institutions and civil society reflect on the work done to further protect children from the various societal ills that plague societies.

Child Protection Week is observed annually to raise awareness and encourage people to care and protect the rights of children.

“The focus of this week is to highlight the efforts made to ensure children’s rights are respected and upheld. Legal Aid SA has, among many other interventions, opted to support civil society organisations which primarily focus on the protection of children and their rights,” said Bongani Mahlangu, Provincial Communication Practitioner.

To raise awareness on children’s rights and responsibilities, the Pinetown office will partner with the Child Welfare in Chatsworth at Cocobar settlement in Bayview on Friday, 1 June for a community outreach programme.

“These partnerships create a trusted avenue for access to state-funded legal services in order to make justice a reality for the children in the care of these organisations,” said Mahlangu.

Legal Aid SA offers all its services and further legal capacity building for employees of these organisations, as well as an active referral system when a case is identified which requires legal advice or legal representation.
