A litterati of Hillcrest scouts and cubs bag 25

A bid to clean up the litter along the Transnet railway line in Hillcrest got underway recently.

MORE than 20 1st Hillcrest scouts, cubs and parents turned up for a two-hour litter blitz, walking two kilometres along the railway track from Paddley`s Crossing at West Riding to Station Masters Arms.

The scouts and cubs did their good deed for the day and helped collect more than 25 bags of rubbish.

“I was amazed at the wide range of litter dumped along the railway line,” said 13-year-old Nicholas Ryan.

“We found many plastic bottles, beverage cans, smashed glass bottles, fast food wrappers, even a broken cane couch and many old clothes.”

The 1st Hillcrest Cub Pack leader, Helen Lewis said, “While it’s important for children to learn respect and care for our environment at a young age, the Hillcrest community would benefit enormously if the Hillcrest businesses did their bit by taking a greater interest with regard to addressing the ongoing litter problem in the Hillcrest CBD.”

All the young helpers who took part in the Hillcrest railway line cleanup were treated to a chicken burger, compliments of Hillcrest Nandos.
