IN March this year, two young people were captured on CCTV footage dumping a broken orange chair and numerous other non-recyclable goods at the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association’s recycling site in Delamore Road.

According to the association’s Marge Mitchell, the other items dropped off included numerous boxes filled with garden rubbish as well as a bag of foam rubber chips.

“As a result of the recently published article, a gentleman by the name of Stuart Cumming kindly offered to remove the chair and the rubbish for free and take it to the Mariannhill landfill site,” said a grateful Marge.

The volunteers of the association who work tirelessly for the greater beauty of Hillcrest said they were grateful to Stuart and his generous act.

“This restores our faith in humanity. We thank the mostly responsible and considerate recyclers for respecting the recycling site. As the trite saying goes, there’s always one who spoils it for the others,” said Marge.

The opening and closing times of the recycling centre are from 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 12.30pm on Saturdays, and 11.30am to 3.30pm on Sundays. It is open on public holidays as well.

What is accepted at the recycling centre:

They accept paper, cardboard, some plastics, Tetrapak, large appliance polystyrene, glass bottles and cans.

Plastic is a major challenge and there are seven categories of plastic and they do not accept category three items such as PVC plumbing pipes; they do not accept category six, the small polystyrene food trays; nor do they accept category seven, which is described as ‘mixed’. The numbers are marked on the items inside a triangle.
