City of Durban responds to Waterfall and Hillcrest power outage

The municipality said they hope to have the fault resolved ‘shortly’.

UPDATE: Reports from the community have revealed that parts of Pinetown are also affected by a power outage.

At this stage it is unclear whether it could be connected to the fault at the Waterfall power station.

THE Highway Mail has been inundated with calls from concerned residents regarding the power outages in the Waterfall and Hillcrest areas.

While some areas have been restored, social media reports have suggested that residents in Hillcrest are still without power.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous , said this was the third time in recent weeks that they had been without power.

“It isn’t always off for long, but it has been happening frequently. And it usually happens during working hours, which is inconvenient,” he said.

According to Mandla Nsele, spokesman for the eThewini Municipality a technical fault at the Waterfall substation is the cause behind the outage.

“Our electricity technicians are on site restoring the cable, and power is expected to be restored shortly,” he said.

This follows a major power outage in March, which affected the Westville, Pinetown, Hillcrest, Cowies Hill, Riverhorse Valley, Queensburgh, Botha’s Hill, Glenwood, Umbilo, Durban North and uMhlanga communities.

Residents who are still experiencing issues can report it to the city’s call centre on 080 1313 111.
