NICK Evans  recently received a call friend, Donovan Carstens, that he couldn’t resist – to rescue a mamba in Queensburgh.

After hearing that the community watch had been notified, Evans raced to the scene.

“Generally, this is a good thing, but sometimes this ends with the snake being shot or killed in some other manner. To my relief, the patrolman was not a snake killer. He usually rescues smaller snakes. The patrolman and the homeowner were getting desperate, as they weren’t succeeding in finding help. Killing the snake was starting to seem like their best option. Fortunately, they waited,” he said.

When he arrived he found that the mamba was hiding in the garage. A young man who lived at the home found the snake when he was looking for something in the garage and heard some movement near his feet.

“The mamba was now hiding behind what I think were outdoor umbrellas (to cover furniture), in bags. I could see it was big. I waited a few minutes for Donovan to arrive, and then went about catching it.”

“When I approached, it welcomed me with its open mouth. One may think it’s trying to scream, Hi!, but in actual fact, it’s trying to say the opposite.

I got the tongs on its neck, and pulled it out slowly. It didn’t like that one bit! It started thrashing around, as they do. For a moment it’s brute strength caught me off guard. I quickly secured the head in my hand, and had to hold it quite tightly, as it was trying to twist out of my grip. It was a beast of a snake, putting up a major fight. I remained calm, and held on firmly. I had it. I could smile,” he said.
