Keep your valuable items safe during Comrades Marathon, warns Hillcrest SAPS

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Capt Linzi Smith advised people to lock their valuable items in a safe place either than their vehicles if they wont be using them.

WITH the up coming Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 10 June and all other sporting events taking place in the Hillcrest area, Hillcrest SAPS has pleaded with the community to please be vigilant and smart about keeping their valuables hidden or left at home and not in view in their parked vehicles.

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Capt Linzi Smith said during the two events that took place in the area recently, criminal activities where valuables were left in plain sight on the seats or on the floor in their vehicles were reported in the station.

“Remote jamming is also still an ongoing issue.”

“It is advised that if you are attending events to support your family and friends and do not require the use of laptops or other valuable items please keep them safely locked up somewhere other than in your vehicle,” said Smith.

She said another issue they experienced was supporters taking their valuables and placing them in bags next to their chairs while watching the event and not

keeping an eye on them while being caught up in the excitement of the event.

Smith added that when opening case dockets, the complainant has to now sign a declaration informing them that if any information comes to light that a false statement has been given, a case docket will be opened up against them and they will be charged for perjury.
