‘Man of Steal’ no match for Westville’s law heroes

Video footage was viewed and "Superman" was positively identified as the wanted robber.

QUICK thinking by police and patrollers as well as working together to fight crime, secured a successful arrest of a robber recently.

Capt Elizabeth Squires, communications officer at Westville SAPS, said a man was chased by Westville Crime Prevention members and neighbourhood watch patrollers on 17 April after he had allegedly broken into a house in Marford Road in Westville earlier that day.

“The robber, later named as “Superman” (because of the shirt he was wearing) jumped over fences, walls and managed to get away from the police. The area was properly cordoned off but somehow he managed to hide and get away,” said Squires.

Fortunately, the next day (Wednesday, 18 April), Constable Wynand Laatz received a call from a neighbourhood patroller who had been part of the chase the previous evening informing him that the robber, who was still wearing the Superman shirt was roaming around outside Spar in Churchill Road.

Constable Wynand Laatz responded to the call and the robber was arrested.

“Video footage was viewed and “Superman” was positively identified as the wanted robber. He was detained on charges of housebreaking and theft and appeared in court for bail, however, the bail was opposed and the case remanded to 19 April for a plea.

“All roleplayers were commended for their assistance in chasing and arresting the robber and again it shows the positive result of fighting crime together,” added Squires.
