Estate agent couple toast to 50 years of marriage

"Our advice to other couples is to share the load, be kind, try and keep the passion alive and practice patience."

FORMER Kloof residents, Rod and Cheryl Hall, who are well known in the property industry, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Friday, 27 April.

The couple have been with Acutts Kloof for 10 years and now in their 18th year with Wakefields, Kloof.

They met on the Umtentweni Beach, South Coast, before Cheryl’s mum, Gwendoline Brauteseth, moved to Port Shepstone shortly after the family lost their father Rolf Brauteseth in 1965.

Rod and Cheryl married at the Norwegian Lutheran Church in the original, Little Church on the Hill, which is pivotal in the lives of folk in Marburg, Izotsha, Port Shepstone and surrounding areas.

Cheryl being part of the Brauteseth clan and Skogheim – her grandparent’s family farm, she holds these fond memories close to her heart.

Rod, originally from Northern Rhodesia (Ndola) moved to Port Shepstone as a young lad.

Cheryl and Rod Hall tied the knot on 27 April 1968.

General Botha Naval Academy saw Rod leave Port Shepstone at the tender age of 15 years to follow his dream of going to sea.

Rod met Cheryl at home while he was on his study leave from Safmarine and she always supported him while he furthered his career at sea.

They have been blessed with a son Brett and a daughter Candice and their spouses Wendy and Leonard who have given Cheryl and Rod “the loves of their lives”, their grandchildren, Jordan and Madison.

They believe the secret to their long-lasting marriage is based on compromise, lots of forgiveness, kindness and upholding their marriage vows.

Cheryl said their marriage has been exciting with lots of travelling, and hard work. They lived in 11 different homes, most of which Rod renovated himself.

She said she always loved Rod’s quality of being protective over her and he smiled and said she has been a faithful person with a good heart and didn’t mind that she was also very beautiful.

“She was a former model but is also a hard-working mother. Our grandchildren love her to bits,” said Rod.

The couple plan to celebrate their golden jubilee with family at their daughter’s home in Durban but were sad that their son and his family will not be able to be there due to work constraints in England.

“Grateful thanks to God for His blessings. Our advice to other couples is to share the load, be kind, try and keep the passion alive and practice patience. Marriage is a lot of hard work and commitment,” said Cheryl and Rod.
