Mixed bag of results for Kearsney sportsmen

Kearsney has played the first weekend’s fixtures for the second term against Glenwood.

KEARSNEY College had a mixed bag of sports results when they faced off against Glenwood at the weekend.

Rugby

The fixture between Kearsney and Glenwood was played at Johnsson Kings Park, providing a great opportunity for the players at that venue.

The talent and class of Glenwood was too much for their opponents, but the Kearsney team showed courage and never gave up.

Glenwood, who must surely be the current top KwaZulu-Natal schools’ rugby team, scored nine tries to Kearsney’s one, which was scored by Aiden Bossert.

Jacques Odendaal also kicked a penalty for Kearsney. Kearsney 1st XV lost to Glenwood 1st XV 8-58.

Both teams provided a highly entertaining game as the curtain raiser to the Sharks-Stormers Saturday clash.

Kearsney’s outstanding players were Sibu Sangweni, Nicholas Baines and Dylan Bissett.

Hockey

The Kearsney and Glenwood 1st XI clash was played under lights, with Glenwood coming off two impressive results against Westville and Northwood. Despite this, Kearsney was able to win the match 5-0, putting in a clinical performance.

Kearsney arrived with a focused approach and, from the first minute, controlled the game and possession. Play was dictated from the back through Guy Morgan, Hayden de Kock and Chase Kelly. Liam Maguire had a strong game in the midfield too.

A lot of credit needs to go to the Kearsney forwards who created scoring opportunities for the team, with man of the match Steven Conway instrumental up front. Credit must also go to their defence for not conceding, against a very positive attacking team.

Goals came through drag flick specialist Morgan, and field goals by Liam Maguire, Gavin Shelly and Steven Conway (2) for Kearsney to finish with a 5-0 win.

This was a deserved result through a clinical performance by the full team.

Tennis
Kearsney 1st tennis team lost to Glenwood 4-5.
Kearsney 2nd tennis team beat Glenwood 5-4.

Tyson has been selected for the SA U16 water polo team which will tour New Zealand to participate at the Pan Pacific Youth Water Polo Festival to be held in Auckland from 7 to 17 July. Tyson has played in the starting team for the KZN U18 Currie Cup team.
