Traffic calming measures implemented on Ridley Park Road

In 2016 eThekwini Municipality head of the Communications Unit, Tozi Mthethwa, said that there were at least three traffic circles being proposed.

AFTER many accidents on Ridley Park Road in Malvern, it was evident years ago that more speed control measures had to be put in place and after the approval two years ago, roadworks are finally underway.

Ridley Park Road is one of the busiest roads in Malvern. Drivers turn off Stella Road into Ridley Park Road with some blatantly speeding down the hill ignoring the fact that there is a speed limit of 60km/h.

The roads department approved the implementation of traffic calming measures in 2016 after a four-year long plea.

The plea was also motivated by an incident that took place in 2013 when a 12-year-old girl was critically injured while walking to church when she was hit by a speeding motorist, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, with three passengers in the car, in Ridley Park Road, near Dipdale Road intersection.

The battle for safer roads was begun by former Queensburgh councillor, André Mitchell, and councillor Chris van den Berg was happy to take the baton from his predecessor.

After years of back and forth correspondence, the roads department finally gave the project the go-ahead.

In 2016 eThekwini Municipality head of the Communications Unit, Tozi Mthethwa, said that there were at least three traffic circles being proposed.

“Its been years of complaints from the community about speeding, accidents and danger on Ridley Park Road to many people who walk to the shops and schools including the elderly and children. The speed humps are welcomed by many, this should bring a feeling of being a little safer on the road.

“I would like to urge people using this road to stick to the rules of the road and be patient and courteous,” said van den Berg.
