Police recover stolen vehicle during Westville house robbery

The vehicle had extensive damage. The victim's laptop was in the vehicle at the time and was also recovered. No injuries were sustained during the shootout between suspects and police.

A 63-YEAR-old man was leaving for work on Friday, 20 April at 6.50am, when he was confronted by four men wearing balaclavas as he walked down the stairs towards the garage on Circle Drive in Westville.
Capt Elizabeth Squires, communication officer at Westville SAPS said they grabbed his bunch of keys and ran into the garage where the vehicle was parked.
“The robbers managed to get into the Colt Mitsubishi. As they started reversing out the garage, the owner pressed the garage remote to try and close the garage door. The robbers successfully drove out of the garage, damaging the garage door and left the property having opened the main gates with the remote on the bunch of keys they grabbed,” said Squires.
It is believed the victim pushed his panic alarm and the SAPS was alerted.

Constable Wynand Laatz proceeded towards Clermont, when the robbers realised they were being chased by police.
They opened fire and a shootout ensued.
The robbers hit the pavement where many bystanders were waiting for transport, they climbed out the vehicle and ran in different directions.
“The vehicle had extensive damage. The victim’s laptop was in the vehicle at the time and was also recovered. No injuries were sustained during the shootout between suspects and police,” said Squires.
She added that the victim was treated on scene for minor facial injuries where the robbers had punched in the face.
A case of house robbery was opened and is being investigated by Westville detectives.

“All members and role-players have been applauded for their quick response and the recovery of the vehicle,” said Squires.
